On a Sunday night at Fort Riley, Military Police detained an Army First Lieutenant at his on-post home and took him to the MP station. The allegation was communicating a threat. He spent the night there before his unit picked him up the next morning.

He retained Bilecki within forty-eight hours. His written account gave Tim a detailed sequence to work from: detention at about 10 p.m., notification to his unit at about 2 a.m., and pickup at about 6 a.m. The account also identified the military police and legal-office contacts. The timing of those events was recorded while the encounter was still fresh.

Bilecki entered while the investigation remained open. Our work began with the Lieutenant’s account and the sequence of the detention, rather than waiting for charges or a reprimand to arrive. We represented him in addressing the threat allegation with the Army.

The matter ended at the investigation stage. No charges were preferred. There was no NJP, GOMOR or officer-elimination proceeding. The Lieutenant continued on active duty.
