In the Military, as in the civilian world, sex crimes are one of most serious charges you can face.  Sex crimes include rape, aggravated sexual assault, abusive sexual contact, indecent liberties with a child, indecent acts, forcible pandering and wrongful sexual contact.  A conviction for any of these will make you a registered sex offender for the rest of your life.  In this "War on Sexual Assault" Congress and the military have placed an unwarranted emphasis on prosecution and conviction in sexual assault cases.  This war has been waged on multiple fronts, beginning with Congress changing the law on sex crimes under the "New Article 120" offense, the JAG Corps adding SVPs to the JAG Corps, sexual assault HQEs being added to the Trial Counsel Assistance Program (TCAP), seven new HQEs whose only job is to train law enforcement agents on sexual assault investigations, 30 new CID agents who will only work sexual assault cases, millions of dollars added to the budget for sexual assault prosecution training, and a sexual assault task force created to "educate" prosecutors, commanders and Convening Authorities about sexual assault prevention and prosecution.  

Like other military campaigns, the military's strategy is to win the war by overwhelming its opponents. 

Innocent Service Members are the casualties of this new "War on Sexual Assault."  The reality today is that if you are accused of a sexual assault in the military, your case will be investigated by the best law enforcement agents and HQEs in the military; your command will be pressured to send your case to courts-martial, where you will be prosecuted by the best attorneys the military has to offer.  Not surprisingly, the Trial Defense Service has not been afforded the same resources to defend those accused of sexual assault and many, if not most, of the free military defense attorneys available to you lack the experience necessary to take on the Army against you.
